Nexus Stray Currents Project

Client: PSP Ltd

Value: £25K

Location: South Gosforth sub station

RHD worked alongside ARUP, Nexus Rail and Power Supply Projects Ltd to help expand one of the Tyne & Wear Metro systems Power Houses at Gosforth’s Metro Sub-station. The works were to allow more efficient running and distribution of power to the metro system. The scheme involved the site investigation including the accurate locating of the number of 11kVa high voltage cables and the excavation of the foundation for an extension to the existing substation at Nexus’ Gosforth Depot. A heavily reinforced in-situ concrete base was then constructed, accommodating the HV cables to enable a pre-formed transformer to be sited on the base. To assist in the siting of the transformer within the given timescales, an early gain high strength concrete mix was used to achieve this. The actual mix we used was tested and found to achieve a compressive strength of 68N/mm2 after 7 days ensuring that the new transformer could be sited on time. The works to the concrete base were complimented by the construction of a new hard stand and weed suppression works to the scheme.
